The clear and practical outer design of the Leica M Typ also focuses on the essentials. The top plate is made from durable aluminium, making the camera around g lighter, and even more ergonomic than its sister models.

For maximum discretion when shooting, the Leica M Typ shutter is barely audible — an invaluable advantage in situations where the photographer needs to remain unobtrusive. As an aid to this, the camera features a shutter cocking system that is considerably quieter in single exposure mode than that of the M Typand enables Leica M (Typ 262) Camera shutter release frequency of up to two frames per second.

In continuous mode, the M Typ has the same sequential shooting speed as its sister model and shoots up to three frames per second. The handling of the Leica M Typ fulfills everything a discerning photographer expects from a Leica M. This includes the Leica M (Typ 262) Camera manual focusing process with the coupled rangefinder and the focusing ring of the lens, as well as the option of selecting automatically determined or manually set shutter speeds.

Furthermore, as this model does not include Live View or video recording, the menu is extremely straightforward and consists of only two pages.

This ensures that all settings are rapidly accessible at all times. White balance is selected by a dedicated button on the back of the camera. In practice, the problem is rare and can be mitigated by stopping down the lens Leica M (Typ 262) Camera that diffraction softening mimics the effect of the missing filter. Shooting a vintage-style lens wide open is probably not the best test of sharpness… Colour can be a problem, with the camera often producing excessively saturated reds and purple colour-casts on fabrics that should be completely black.

This is caused by the weak IR filtration on the sensor assembly, and can be exaggerated Leica M (Typ 262) Camera specific surfaces and lighting, requiring difficult and time-consuming local edits to correct. None of the lenses that I have used with the camera have exhibited colour or softness artefacts towards the edge of the frame — indeed sharpness at the frame edge with lenses such as the 21mm Super-Elmar is astonishingly good.

Leica lenses are justly renowned for their combination of diminutive size, high image quality, smooth rendering, and excellent mechanical build quality. And the M does an excellent job of getting the best results from these lenses.

Review: The Leica M typ 262

With rendering this gorgeous, who needs a subject? Exposure and Metering Exposure metering uses the same principle as the M7, relying on a measure of light reflected from the shutter curtains.

Curiously, the metering pattern is not symmetric, with the upper half of the frame in landscape orientation about half a stop less sensitive than the lower half. This seems true of both M and M7, and holds for different lenses. The meter pattern can also be Leica M (Typ 262) Camera by the lens and aperture that is used due to mechanical vignetting, and quite possibly the proximity of the rear lens elements to the shutter curtain.

These work excellently in most scenarios, but tend to severely underexpose with high contrast scenes, such as landscapes with any significant sky areas, or night scenes containing bright point sources Leica M (Typ 262) Camera light.

Minor under-exposure is, within reason, benign. At lower ISOs there is a lot of potential to correct under exposure in post-processing, although noise and some banding may become evident with extreme adjustments Leica M (Typ 262) Camera particularly when shot above ISO Minor over-exposure, however, can easily ruin an image. In the following two shots of the same subject, the first was exposed for the shadows and the highlights subsequently pulled, while the second was exposed for the highlights and the shadows subsequently pushed: Blown highlights, recovered in Capture One, leading to a featureless sky and colour casts.

The subject, but deliberately underexposed and with the shadows lifted in Capture One. The clipped sky areas loose not just detail, but also suffer colour shifts. With film, I would normally expose for the shadows and let the highlights take care of themselves — but with the M I need to be careful to expose for any highlight detail that I want to retain.

Small changes in framing can drastically alter the metered exposure, and so I often find myself chimping and making several exposures to get the best result. For street photography with a wide angle lens it is usually safer to forgo the Leica M (Typ 262) Camera and shoot in full manual.

Leica M (Typ 262) Camera Street Art, Glories, Barcelona. Black and White I have not shot many intentional black and white images with the Mpreferring to use the M7 and film where this is desirable. However, RAW conversions to black and white work very well and provide greater tolerance against unwanted effects from extreme shadow pushes or highlight pulls. As with most digital image, the quality of the results will depend mainly on the software that you use here, Capture One.

Reliability, Service and Support In nearly a year of shooting the camera has mostly worked flawlessly in normal use. Leica is somewhat infamous for SD card compatibility problems, but fortunately the lock-ups are rare and have not yet corrupted other data on the card. But I am significantly less comfortable with the robustness of the camera. Scuff on the lower cover following a fall. This required an expensive six week repair… I suffered a collapse while shooting a street protest at the start of the year.

The camera and lens hit the ground along with me…resulting in a slightly scuffed bottom plate and small Leica M (Typ 262) Camera to the lens hood. The only externally visible damage to the body was a small 5mm mark on the battery cover see inset image.
